The vamp and heel are covered with genuine leather, which protects your feet well in slushy weather. Designed for use in low temperature conditions. The boots are made of felt (coarse natural sheep wool) with an oil- and petrol-resistant sole (TEP) using a glue-and-stitch fastening method. Perfectly protect feet from low temperatures, petroleum products and general industrial pollution. The boot is split, on the back side there is a wedge with two adjustable leather fasteners, which allow you to tuck the bottom of the trousers into the boots and tighten them along the leg. Indispensable for use in all climatic zones, they retain all the best properties of natural felt boots, so popular in our country. And in conditions of shortage and high cost of the latter, they are a good alternative to felt boots. Felt boots can be used in various industries, construction, agriculture, warehouses or utilities. It seems difficult to expand the range of existing materials. However, manufacturers succeed. New fabrics are constantly being created, the properties of which are regulated through a combination of natural and synthetic fibers. But these innovations do not at all force us to abandon old materials that have been known for many centuries. On the contrary, the popularity of natural fabrics is growing again, and many of them are finding new uses in completely unexpected areas. This is, for example, felt. Now not only clothing items are made from it, but also shoes and bags. It is also very popular among craft lovers.

Composition and types

The history of felt began after people managed to tame wild sheep. True, initially their wool was not suitable for making the material: the structure of the hairs was distinguished by the absence of scales, thanks to which the hairs would be bonded to each other under the influence of high temperatures and moisture. But the fur of domestic sheep has just such a feature. So, as a result of the felting procedure, a dense material is obtained.

Nowadays, the raw material for felt is also mainly sheep's wool. But there are also exceptions. If you use the wool of rabbits and goats, which is much thinner, then you get a type of felt -. Hats, bags, and outerwear items are usually made from it.

There are also other types of felt. Most of them are only suitable for creating certain things.

  • Technical. This felt is the thickest - up to twelve millimeters. It is used for sound insulation, as a substrate for linoleum, and filters are made from it.
  • Furniture. A softer variety.
  • Shoe. It is used both for the manufacture of shoes themselves and for insoles.
  • Yurt - used by nomadic peoples to build yurts.

Positive properties

Felt fabric has a number of positive qualities.

  • Environmentally friendly. It is made from pure animal wool without any synthetic impurities. At the same time, it is not without reason that it is used as a substrate and insulating material. The fact is that felt is able to absorb harmful substances, such as formaldehyde.
  • Felt also absorbs moisture well and does not allow cold to pass through. This is why the material is so popular in construction - a room insulated with this fabric is protected from dampness and drafts. For the same reason, felt is so popular in the production of shoes. Perhaps the models made from it will not seem too beautiful to look at. But such boots will save you in severe frosts.
  • Antibacterial properties. Another important quality for both premises and shoes. Felt does not harbor microbes and does not spread mold. In boots made of this material you don’t have to worry about the appearance of fungus.
  • The felt is very light. Despite the density of felt, these canvases weigh very little.
  • Long service life. Felt does not rub or stretch; it is extremely difficult to damage it through physical impact.

Flaws

The list of advantages of the material is very impressive. But it also has some disadvantages.

  • Items may shrink. However, the threat of such a problem arises only with improper care. It is important to follow all the rules to the smallest detail.
  • The ability to absorb moisture above was attributed to the positive properties that make felt so good as an insulating material and base in the production of footwear. But this can also be considered a disadvantage, since liquid accumulates in the material, and it dries slowly.
  • Although the canvases are protected from mold, they are a tasty morsel for moths.

Special means will help protect against moths. As a rule, they are sold in the form of records and sachets of flavors, which must be placed in the closet, next to the things at risk.

Where is felt used?

Felt is used in many areas.

  • Thanks to its naturalness, it remains popular among nomadic peoples. They make dwellings from it - yurts. Most of their simple interior items are also made from these woolen fabrics. There is no doubt about what their folk clothes, shoes and hats are made of. The use of felt by these peoples is explained not only by the traditions and conditions of their residence. Since ancient times, respect for this material was also based on belief in its magical and healing properties. It was believed that the specific smell of wool, which does not completely disappear during processing, protects against perfume. In addition, it helps fight diseases.

But even if you don’t believe in such miracles, the beauty of the felt products of nomadic peoples will still not leave you indifferent. To decorate things, they use different techniques - creating patterns by combining multi-colored wool and embroidery.

  • But city dwellers are not averse to trying on things made of felt - hats, bags, shoes, clothes.
  • Needlewomen create realistic toys, panels, paintings and slippers with original drawings from felt.

Care

Rules for caring for felt differ depending on the purpose of the items. Remember that if the rules are not followed, the material may lose its shape.

How to clean felt shoes?

  • At the first stage, it is better to limit yourself to dry cleaning. To do this, you can use either a vacuum cleaner or a special brush or rag.
  • If this was not enough, then you can move on to washing. This can only be done manually.
  • Before starting the wash itself, it is better to soak the product in water. Its temperature should not be higher than forty degrees. For severe stains, you can immediately add a cleaning agent to the water while soaking. The item should be soaked for two hours.
  • Use only special gels or powders for wool.
  • Afterwards, you need to rinse the felt at least twice in clean warm water, being careful not to deform the item.
  • Then let the water drain. If you cannot get rid of all the liquid, wrap the product in a towel and, using gentle pressure, squeeze it out.
  • To prevent shoes from losing their shape, put them on a last.

Cleaning toys is a process that requires care.

  • In this case, dry cleaning is also preferable;
  • In extreme cases, you can use cleaning products, but you will have to wipe the toys with a cloth. It is important to proceed carefully so as not to damage the parts.

Conclusion

Felt is a very ancient material. And over the centuries of its existence, its composition has not changed. It is still made from sheep's wool, but varieties have also appeared (for example, felt), in the manufacture of which it is possible to use other raw materials.

Due to its properties, felt is most suitable for insulating homes and making shoes. And nomadic peoples even use it to build their yurts. True, the material is not without its shortcomings. But they are not that significant.

In care it is better to use dry cleaning. If you decide to wash a felt product, it is important to be careful not to deform it.

Felt belongs to non-woven materials, the manufacturing tradition of which dates back more than five thousand years. If fabric made from plant fibers is associated with farmers, then the nomads and pastoralists of Eurasia, whose main source of livelihood were sheep herds, learned to felt sheep's wool. To this day, in Mongolia, Afghanistan, Iran, Buryatia and other places, wool felt is made in the same way as thousands of years ago. This dense and warm fabric does not lose its popularity, as evidenced by the real “felt boom” of recent years.

What is felt for?

To this day, felt occupies a very important place in the everyday life of many Asian peoples. Temporary housing (yurt) and almost its entire interior are created from it, protective armor and household supplies were made from it, thin felt was and is used for shoes, hats, and as the main fabric of winter clothing.

They say that the smell of sheep's wool drives away karakurts. Therefore, natural felt was considered a magical and healing remedy (however, the latter is not refuted by modern medicine), it was carefully finished and decorated. To this day, three main methods of decorating felt products have been preserved:

  1. Felting of an ornament, in which colored wool is laid out on a base in accordance with the pattern, after which felting begins (Turkmen felts).
  2. An application that is widely used these days.
  3. Embroidery (Buryat and Mongolian felt).

Russia and other Slavic peoples adopted this woolen non-woven textile from Asian peoples, evidence of which is the Turkic origin of its name (ajlyk - bedspread). Felt has become the material for the widespread felt boots, which are indispensable in frosty and snowy winters..

This fabric also spread to Europe, primarily in the form of thin felt, which is made by rolling a mixture of wool and down between rollers.

Currently, not only woolen felt is produced, but also especially durable artificial felt from synthetic fibers, which is used mainly for technical needs.

For technical use, the following types of felt are produced:

  • coarse wool (6-12 mm), which is used for thermal and sound insulation, substrate for linoleum, various gaskets, seals, filters, etc.;
  • thin technical (2.4-6 mm), which is used in electrical engineering;
  • furniture, which is relatively soft and is used in the manufacture of upholstered furniture and mattresses.

Felt- This is a special type of textile characterized by high density. It can be made from both synthetic materials and natural wool. Natural felt is very popular due to its properties and high level of environmental friendliness and safety.

It is produced, as a rule, from the wool of North Caucasian sheep. A special wool felting technology involves the use of steam and water. Synthetic felt is made in almost the same way: the fibers are compressed, twisted, knocked down, tangled, forming a solid fabric. This material has high strength. We offer both types of felt in a wide variety of density, thickness, color and technical characteristics.

The Vinyl Tex company offers many types of felt

The most popular type of technical felt is natural wool, which is not surprising. After all, this is an environmentally friendly material that is produced without the use of chemical impurities. It is completely safe for health, and its amazing properties allow it to be used for a variety of purposes, from sound insulation and sealing to protecting furniture and flooring from damage.

Felt: gentle but reliable

Felt- this is a special type of felt consisting of rabbit, hare, goat or beaver fluff. Felt is quite thin and soft compared to other types of felt, so it is actively used in needlework, sewing clothes and shoes, and soft toys. Berets and hats are also made from it. It's hard to imagine what the textile industry would be like without felt.

From us you can always buy felt and felt of the highest quality. We provide the opportunity to place a small order if you want to make handmade products from the most delicate felt. However, we always have materials for large deliveries. Our company offers

Felt: old traditions and fashion trends

Materials obtained by felting animal wool were known to nomadic peoples more than two thousand years ago, and already at that time they found a wide variety of uses. They were used to make the walls of nomadic dwellings, various household items, military equipment, clothing, shoes, hats, and jewelry. The main type of felted textile is felt, which was obtained by compacting wet sheep wool. Felt has a later origin. This is a double-sided material made from fine wool with the addition of down, wild animal hair, and currently viscose and synthetics. Thin and dense felt fabric was traditionally used for expensive hats, warm shoes, and various accessories. Currently, due to the improvement of technologies for producing felt, its range has expanded significantly, and it has become one of the favorite materials for designers and hand-made artists.

The technology of wet felting, which is used to produce the traditional felt material, has not undergone significant changes over the past centuries. In industrial production, all processes are carried out using automatic equipment, and felt products are classified according to:

  • composition (wool, wool blend, synthetic);
  • thickness (from 2 to 5 mm);
  • form (flat sheets, caps, stockings);
  • color and surface treatment method.

As for pure wool felt, it is a natural material with high thermal insulation properties.. It is characterized by the presence of pile on the surface with a height of 0.5 to 12 mm. Wool material is durable, has water- and dirt-repellent properties, protects against fire and the action of active substances. It is used to make warm shoes, hats, and also for technical purposes. However, it quickly deforms when wet, is damaged by moths and is quite expensive.

Wool-blend varieties of felt consist of wool, synthetics and viscose in different proportions. They can have a variety of colors and textures of varying softness, and are used primarily for decorative purposes. The good plasticity of such felt makes it a common material in the manufacture of toys and various crafts.

By felting acrylic or polyester fibers, synthetic felt is obtained, which is thin, smooth, holds its shape well and absorbs acrylic dyes. In addition, felted synthetic material can be washed and is inexpensive. However, it is unhygienic and has poor thermal insulation properties, and upon contact with skin it can cause allergies. This is one of the most common materials for creativity; toys, art panels, bags, decorative cases and other accessories are made from it.

A new and still rare material is bamboo felt.. It is made on the basis of bamboo fiber, has high hygienic and antibacterial properties and is very pleasant to the touch, in addition, it has a silky surface and absorbs various dyes well. However, since bamboo fiber is highly hygroscopic, this material absorbs moisture well, after which it becomes fragile.

In addition to traditional felted fabrics, there are also new technologies for their production. One of them is the industrial production of woven felt. What is it - a mesh-based fabric made of jute or synthetics with felted fibers, which when wet retains strength and does not deform. The second method, which is used when working manually with this material, is called dry felting, in which the felt mass is formed from threads repeatedly pulled through a voluminous workpiece.

Is it possible to make felt yourself?

Making felt accessories is a common type of needlework, the skills of which are not difficult to master. The key to success is the selection of high-quality raw materials - uniform fibers of wool, down or synthetics, which should be pre-dyed in the appropriate color. After this, you need to choose a felting method - dry or wet - and prepare the appropriate accessories.

  1. For wet felting, you will need raw materials with the obligatory addition of wool and fluff, a soap solution, a flat container of the appropriate size, a compacting roller or kitchen rolling pin, a mesh, a well-absorbent fabric and plastic film (preferably with pimples). First of all, prepare a concentrated solution of laundry soap (you can use any liquid soap diluted with water in a ratio of 1:5). Then the bottom of the bath is lined with film, the wool is evenly laid out on it and moistened with a soap solution. The wet felt layer is covered with a mesh, compacted with hands, then with a roller. After this, excess moisture is removed with a cloth, another layer of wool is laid out, it is again moistened with a soap solution and this is repeated until the desired thickness is achieved. Then the finished sheet of felt is taken out along with the film and placed to dry on a flat or voluminous surface. In the process of such felting, colored threads (floss) are often laid over the surface, imitating embroidery or lace.
  2. The process of dry felting (filting) is used to create three-dimensional objects (toys, jewelry, etc.). It requires a bulky blank, which is best made from padding polyester, as well as yarn of any composition and a set of folding needles with notches. For beginners, it is better to purchase all these items in a set. In the process of dry felting, a thread is repeatedly pulled with a needle either through the entire volume of the workpiece, or only along its surface. It is better to carry out this operation on a foam rubber mat to avoid injury from the needle.

When working with felt, the appliqué technique is most often used. Thick sheets are used for the base; various parts are cut out from thin sheets, which are secured with glue or sewn together with a loop seam. For volumetric applications and various shapes, synthetic padding, synthetic padding, and holofiber are used.

How to care for felt products?

Although felt, especially wool, has dirt-repellent properties, the need to clean it periodically arises. Dust is removed with a vacuum cleaner or brush, and shiny spots are wiped with fine salt. The best way is professional dry cleaning; at home you can use ammonia or gasoline.

Small items (if they are made without painting) can be washed, taking certain precautions. To do this, they are immersed in a warm solution of detergents, and lightly wiped with a brush, then rinsed in clean water and lightly squeezed. After this, the product is given the required shape, placed on an absorbent lining and dried away from heaters and sunlight.
