New Year is one of these holidays. The New Year’s festivities begin on December 31 and continue into the early hours of January 1.

New Year is a great holiday. Everybody likes it very much. Especially this holiday is loved by children. New Year is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home with members of the family and friends. People decorate their houses, send greeting cards and buy gifts for kids, relatives and friends. A New Year’s tree is a symbol of celebration . It is usually covered with coloured balls and strings of coloured lights .

New Year’s Eve is a time for fun. People spend the holiday at home or in restaurants. The most popular New Year’s Eve drink is champagne. Champagne is the drink that symbolizes celebration and it is often served for the midnight toast. At 12 o’clock everybody raises a glass of champagne and says “Happy New Year!” New Year’s Eve festivals often continue until two or three o’clock in the morning.

New Year’s Day is a special day. Many people make New Year resolutions , give up bad habits or plan for future. From the ancient times to the present New Year’s customs have been connected with saying good-bye to the past and looking forward to a better future.

New Years Celebrations Around the World 2012

New Year is one of the most beloved and cherished holidays of the year. Both adults and children like celebrating this day. In most countries it traditionally falls on the night of December 31 st . Thus, January 1 st marks the beginning of the new calendar year.

As for me, I start thinking of New Year presents at the beginning of December. I usually prepare handmade postcards for people I love and value. They say that I make fantastic postcards. That’s because I attended some scrapbooking classes several years ago.

Starting from the end of November all the shops, offices and other places in the street wear special, festive decorations and remind a fairy tale. As for my family, we start decorating the house in the middle of December.

My father usually buys a tall fir-tree and sets it up in the living-room. My brother and I happily decorate it with bright thematic toys, garlands and confetti.

For the New Year feast my mum cooks special dishes. Every year, on the 31 st of December there are plenty of sweet cookies, some vegetable salads, a roasted chicken and a bottle of champagne on our table.

At midnight my dad fills everyone’s glasses with champagne and says the toast to welcome the coming year. We also turn on the TV to hear the chimes of the Kremlin. At the same time I know that somewhere in London my English penfriend listens to the chimes of famous Big Ben.

New Year’s Day

My name is Catherine. I’m 12 years old. In our family’s favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve. In late December, the streets, parks, plazas dress in festive attire. Through the streets and squares stretched garlands colored lanterns. Everyone is preparing for the New Year. And in the main square set a huge tree. We are beginning to prepare for the holiday. On Christmas fairs buy each other gifts, Christmas decorations and tinsel. December 30, we set an artificial tree, and I myself dress up her for the holiday, hang toys, garlands. December 31 I help my mother to cook a festive table on arrival. New Year’s Eve always seems to me a magical and unforgettable. At midnight, after the president’s speech on television, begin to beat the chimes. We congratulate each other a happy new year and make a wish, and then exchange gifts. Мы поздравляем друг друга с новым годом и загадываем желание, а потом обмениваемся подарками. Когда я была маленькая, то подарки находила под ёлкой и думала, что их мне принёс Дед Мороз. И хоть я уже взрослая, и не верю, что существует Дед Мороз, но в новогоднюю ночь хочется оказаться в сказке и поверить в чудо. Новый год приносит много радости и веселья. Every country has its national holidays, but there are also holidays that are common for many countries. New Year’s Day is the first holiday of each New Year. In Russia it is the most popular holiday, but in the West people pay more attention to Christmas.

New Year is always connected with our new hopes and dreams. Everyone hopes that next new year will be better than the last one. As usual people make New Year Resolutions, they promise to start doing morning exercises, to eat healthier food. Unfortunately people don’t always keep them.

The celebration of this holiday begins on New Year’s Eve, that is, on the 31st of December. At home people stay up until midnight and much later. They light coloured lamps on New Year Tree and have late dinner with champagne. Sometimes they just watch TV or go out for late walk. Everybody gets presents.

In Scotland New Year’s Eve is called Hogmanay. Also the Scottish have the custom of First-Footing.

Most differences in celebrating New Year are connected with a meal or special food. For example, in Switzerland special bread, rich in butter, eggs and raisin is baked and a roasted goose is cooked. In Spain there is a custom to eat 12 grapes at midnight. In Greece some people play cards believing that they will be lucky the whole year if they win. In Russia the traditional dish for the holiday is “Russian salad”(оливье).

How I Saw the New Year in

New Year is my favourite holiday.We celebrate it on the 31st of December.

This year I celebrated New Year with my family. On New Year Eve we bought a New Year tree and decorated it with coloured balls and bright lights. We bought presents for our friends and relatives. My mother and I cooked a holiday supper. We made tasty salads, chicken, potatoes and mushrooms. We made a holiday cake, too. We bought a lot of fruit and sweets. We decorated our house with flakes and toys and put beautiful candles on the fireplace. We put a nice tablecloth, place and cups on the table.

Our guests came to visit us in the evening. They gave me wonderful presents. My aunt gave me a teddy bear as a present. My uncle`s present for me was a beautiful doll.

Then Father Frost came to our place. He was so funny! He had a big bag of presents.I told him a poem about winter, and he gave me a computer game as a present.

At last New Year came! We congratulated our dearest and nearest and wished them a Happy New Year! We enjoyed food and drinks. We danced, sang songs and played. I played the guitar. We had a good time together.

New Year was a merry and a happy holiday. I liked it very much.

Новый год был весёлый и счастливый праздник. Мне он очень понравился.
